New.. My life show (instrumental) rap hip-hop beat made with Yamaha synthesizer and fruity loops..

Why does my MIDI input sound so terrible?

I just bought a USB-MIDI converter to connect my Yamaha P120 piano straight to the USB on my laptop. Also got MidiSwing, a free sequencer, to record the input with and it works great - except the playback is horrendous. I have 4 output options available: Microsoft MIDI Mapper, USB Audio Device(when selected these both play it back through my piano speakers) and Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth and Java Sound Synthesizer. These last two play through my laptop but sound sharp and robotic, nothing like a real piano (no matter which of the piano instruments I select).

What do I need in order to get realistic sounds in a sequencer? Are there alternative Synths I should download - or special samples/instruments to incorporate into them - or do I need a whole new program?

The poor sound comes from the low quality soundcard almost every computer has. The soundcard -generally a low-end Creative Soundblaster) have limited sound capabilities and definitively a bad sound for real instruments.

If you have a laptop, probably the best option is to install a VST Virtual Instrument. There are fantastic ones from Native Instruments and Steinberg, with truly realistic pianos you can choose to playback your midi recordings... with even more quality than your piano.
