Need help with a VHS to DVD conversion?

I have a box of old VHS tapes I want to convert to DVD. I have a relatively new Dell Inspiron laptop. It has 4 MB of memory 500 GB hard drive, 64 bit Win 7 OS, etc, I also have the Magnavox VCR machine to play the tapes with.

My question is what will I need in the way of software & hardware to do the conversion?

I believe I"ll need at least a USB capture card & some software.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

You may take a look at this guide, it's about how to capture video from VHS to computer and burn to DVD, it works pretty well for me

Hope it helps. If you still have problem, feel free to contact me.

Digital Camcorders With Analog to Digital Conversion?

I am in a media class and had been using a digital codec converter box that allowed me to plug in the traditional red/yellow/white video cords from any device on one side, and have it play into the computer through a firewire.

It recently broke so I'm looking to replace it.

I first thought of getting another converter box such as this:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Canopus+ADVC+110&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=3450769332568890678&ei=6YvCScy8HYjBnQeczICiCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&resnum=4&ct=result#ps-sellers

...but, now I want to get a new camcorder that includes this functionality. I must be able to plug in the yellow/red/white AV cords from a DVD or VHS player, and have the video transport into a Mac computer / iMovie software through a firewire cord.

This is NOT for PCs or for USB cords.

Are there camcorders that can facilitate this conversion? Which are the best? Thanks.

There used to be more of a selection - most new camcorders no longer have "AV-in" or "AV-passthrough" anymore. You will be better off getting an external box.

I just got a Canopus ADVC110 and it works great connecting an analog video source (VHS deck, Security DVR with no IP address, standalone industrial camera connected to a monitor, etc) connecting to an iMac, PowerBook or Macbook (with a firewire port) and importing that analog video using iMovie or FinalCut Pro. What is nice about the 110 is that it can also be used to export video from iMovie and FinalCut back out to the VHS deck if needed.

When you connect it to the Mac using the 6-pin firewire cable, it uses the firewire power to run. There is also a 4-pin firewire port - but then you need to supply the power with an external AC power adapter.

My Sony HDR-FX1 has AV-passthrough, but I don't know if you want to spend that kind of $.
