Presonus Or M audio

RAM computer memory: Why is it important? Particularly to do with audio recording programs?
So, I am not a techie genius by any means. I need someone to explain RAM memory to me...I looked it up on wikipedia, but that didn't really help. I'm looking to run a music program such as Presonus' Studio One or something similar on my computer and use it to record tracks. I get that I need hard drive space to store my music files, but what does RAM do?
A page I looked at online gave me the impression that RAM is used to relay info from the hard drive to wherever it's needed using electric signals, but cannot store info permanently. Is that the idea?
Thanks so much!
RAM is vital for audio recording programs. Since there is a lot of high quality information travelling to the computer from your interface (whatever you're recording with). I find that if I'm only recording a couple tracks at a time, 1GB of RAM actually does the trick quite nicely (assuming your computer isn't gunked up with other stuff). If you're looking to multi-track and layer more than 3 or 4 times, you're definitely going to want something with a little more RAM. My current recording computer has a 2.1GHZ dual-core processor and 4GB DDR3 RAM. I've never experienced a dropout using windows 7. I use Sony Acid Pro and FL Studio mostly but I have just about every recording program loaded on there.
I started a website for home recording enthusiasts at http://homemusicpro.com I'll be sure to write an article about this soon, the site just launched a month and a half ago. There should be some good information on there for you if you want to start recording music though. Most of the articles are geared towards computer based recording because that's what I do now. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment on any of the articles and I'll address it ASAP. Thanks!
