What exactly is that? is that whats needed to connect my keyboard to a computer music editing software? like let's say cubase or music creator by cakewalk.
yes it is. MIDI is a transfer protocol that sends perfomance data to and from your keyboard. That includes what notes, what sounds(voices- piano, organ, flute etc), and how hard you pressed them.
if you already have the program then you only need a (relatively) cheap midi usb cable under 50 bucks.
If not you may do better buying an ouboard usb midi interface complete with software for under 200 dollars.
standalone cubase programs are not cheap. Most are upwards of 300 bucks and you still need the cable. the kits are self contained. I have a Tascam unit on order for $125 with software that is compatible with other programs. Try Long and McQuade if you are in Canada west of Ottawa.

Cakewalk Dimension How can I replicate the sound of Radiohead's keyboard (Everything In Its Right Place) in Cakewalk Sonar?
I'm looking for a virtual instrument or sound in Sonar that can replicate the keyboard used in Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place." The closest sound I can find is "Obscure 1" (a synth base that can be opened in Dimension LE), but this just isn't cutting it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jeff - sorry, I'm not familiar with Sonar, however, for the original keyboard sound, this article may help:
Ever hear a synth sound that immediately grabbed you by the ears and made you wonder what it was? And when you figured it out, you realized it was so simple that you smacked yourself for not coming up with it yourself? I sure have, and Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” is one those songs. From their mysterious Kid A CD, this was the kickoff track that made a lot of folks wonder where the heck they were going on this deep, dreamy disc.
At first, “Everything’s” main figure appears to be a Rhodes electric piano. But on closer listen, it’s a little too robotic and electronic sounding to be a real Rhodes (the other giveaway is the lack of high frequency tine overtones, but more on that later). Lucky for us, at the very end of the track Radiohead kindly gives away the secret: By opening the filter wide and tweaking with the resonance, it becomes clear that it’s an analog polysynth. On Radiohead’s Meeting People Is Easy DVD, you can see Johnny Greenwood in the studio manning a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, so I’m guessing that’s what they used.
Making the patch is deceptively easy, but I’ll throw in a few tricks to spice it up.
Almost any polyphonic virtual analog synth will do; there isn’t too much crazy voodoo involved. We’re going to use a one-oscillator patch with the waveform set to a narrow pulse wave. If you have variable pulse-width control, set it almost as narrow as it will go; about 10-20%. You may need to tweak this later on. You’ll want to set the oscillator an octave or two down to get everything in its right range. The audio samples on www.keyboardmag.com should help you in the fine-tuning process (if not, I make house calls).
We’ll use a lowpass filter (24dB if you have the option), with the cutoff frequency almost all the way down. Set the keyboard tracking close to all the way up, so the sound gets gradually brighter as you ascend the keyboard. And we’ll use an envelope generator to gently shape the filter cutoff frequency; this is usually governed by the “envelope amount” knob. Set the filter envelope for zero attack, long decay, almost full sustain level and a long release (about five seconds). Now gradually bring up the envelope amount knob until the notes have a little bit of shape. This is a very dark sound we’re after, so don’t be afraid to keep it mellow and turn up the volume; dang, I sound like a hippie! The amplitude envelope should be set to match the filter envelope closely; long and dreamy.
Here’s where the “outside trickery” comes into play. If you listen to the track, the sound is very in your face and wide. We’ll accomplish the “in your face” part with lots of compression. You’ll want to use the warmest, biggest compressor in your arsenal; I used the Waves Renaissance Compressor. Now we need the wide part. Go back for a moment: We could thicken things up by using a two-oscillator patch and detuning the oscillators slightly. But instead, I recommend sending the sound to a nice wide stereo chorus or doubler effect in your mixer’s bus section. Why? Dual-oscillator synth patches have a different tonality than chorused single-oscillator sounds, that’s why! It’s hard to describe, but it’s a little starker, which is what we’re after. Experiment, see for yourself, and add this to your bag of programming tricks. I used Logic’s Spreader effect here. You can also add some quarter-note delay for fun. The delay time is about 485ms, and if you’re programming it in your sequencer, the track is in 10/4 time! Very crafty they are.
One more Superfly trick: If you’d like to mix in a dash of Rhodes authenticity, you can use a second oscillator to recreate the super-high pitched Rhodes tine noise. You can use a thin pulse wave or a triangle wave, and set the interval two octaves, nine half steps, and 50 cents above the main oscillator (this is the same as 33 half steps and 50 cents). You’ll want to fine tune the mix level. You might also need to open up the cutoff frequency to let that little guy through.

Fruity Cakewalk How can I get my compter to play midi files?
For some reason, my computer won't play midi files. I have a 5.1 diamond multimedia sound card and am using a basic configuration of two front speakers, two surround, and one subwoofer from cyber acoustics. I'm also running Finale 2002, Cakewalk, and Fruity Loops which are all music notation/recording programs. I've checked them to make sure they aren't causing the problem and as far as I can tell, they aren't. Any suggestions?
Without knowing what operating system you're using, the media player, etc it's difficult to offer specific advice. If you're using Windows Media Player, playback support for MIDI Sequence in Windows is actually provided by Microsoft DirectX and your sound card, not the Player.
You should first consult your sound card documentation to see if it offers any troubleshooting techniques. If no documentation is available, you can try the steps in this Microsoft tutorial. Click on "Why can't I play MIDI files?"

I use Reason it has infinite number of sounds and pro studios are using it.
It is hard to learn to use. If you can find somebody to teach you Reason (or find a book about 'How To Use Reason'), I'd recommend that.
Compatible Sonar Cakewalk - Sonar Home Studio 6.2 - where are my drivers??
I have re-installed my Home Studio 6.2 onto my new Vista machine. The programme works and is Vista compatible, ie the midi and audio files play, but there is no sound. The programme midi drivers are not showing. Also there are no audio drivers, the programme says they may be use with another programme. In fact I can play (with sound) both midi and audio files with Windows Media Player. Does anyone know the answer to these missing drivers on Sonar Home Studio?

Click Options | Audio | Advanced. Set your Driver Mode to MME-32 bit. If you do not see Driver Mode, make sure the box next to “Always use mme interface” is checked. Click OK and restart the program. If prompted, allow the Wave Profiler to test your hardware.

I'm thinking of buying Cubase, but is it easy to use? I've heard Sonar is quite good too. Which is better?
