Jupiter Symphony - what size orchestra would typically perform this work?
It is scored for woodwinds and strings, but how many players of each instrument would there typically be?
While I'm sure you can find it scored for a smaller group a symphonic orchestra would typically perform this work. Here goes with an approximate break down of instrumentation:
30 Violins, 12 Violas, 10 Cellos, 8 Double Bass
1 Piccolo, 3 Flutes, 3 Clarinets, 3 Oboes, 1 English Horn, 1-3 low clarinets (Bass, Contra-alto and/or Contra-bass), 3 Bassoons, 1 Contra-Bassoon
3 trumpets, 3 trombones (1 a Bass trombone), 4 horns, 1 tuba
1 or 2 harps, Piano and maybe a Celesta or Electronic Keyboard, and a whole passel of percussionists (half-dozen or so).
This configuration is only approximate and every symphonic orchestra adjusts to achieve the sound and balance the conductor wants.
