If you notice a severe depression in the head that won't go away with a little tightening, it's been too loose for too long and it is time to replace the head. The head needs to be kept tight, make a habit of checking it whenever you play. It should just slightly depress, adjust the tailpiece till you get the right tension. It really affects the sound when the head isn't kept tight enough. Be careful not to tighten it unevenly or too much, as you can break the head. A head should last through many sets of strings if maintained properly. I replace my strings a couple times a year, and I haven't changed my banjo head since last year's retreat(it was broken).
If by spacing, you mean the height of the strings above the neck, or action, typically the lower the action, the easier and better the phantom effects sound, hammer-ons and such. Try to keep it low enough that you don't get any buzzing.
Patrick plays with a very low action, something I fixed on mine after seeing his. It helped me alot.

I found whenever I was having problems wih my mic being detected in this application or others I would open the sound recorder app that comes with Windows > Start/All programs/Accessories /Entertainment/sound recorder < then I would use that app to configure my mic ,make sure its working ,then go back to MSN and try using mic again . I found I would have to do this everytime B/4 using a app with my mic ,if it was not being detected !
