Which recording software for laptop/home recording?

am currently using an older version of cubase, and an edirol ua-25 interface on pc laptop, but the interaction is very poor, the software extremely un-userfriendly and unconducive to making/mixing music. Dog of a program, usually won't even let me record. I use a mic and direct bass/guitar input. I've used a zoom 8 tracker before and miss the ease of use. Which recording/mixing software is best on ease of use, cheap enough, and still has enough features to make good-sounding recordings? For everything from multi-track songs to field recording. Good quality basics. Many thanks!

I have used Sony SoundForge and Cool Edit Pro (which is now Adobe Audition) I like both.

Distorted audio recording?

I recorded in jazz band rehearsal with digital recorder with stereo mic(ZOOM H4). It came out really great and very clear but when Vibraphone player hits certain notes, the recording sound is kinda distorted.. . Are there any ways I can make this right by using Pro tools or logic... etc? I tried to put denoiser/EQ/filters on each different programs(Protools, logic, cubase) but didn't correct those distorted spots.
What should I do?

what the person above me is referring to is called the "cat turd" philosophy. essentially, if something is a cat turd, you bury it. this is generally bad advice in the recording world..and definitely not accurate here.

the first thing you need to make sure of is that the note the vibraphone hits isn't causing an issue for YOUR setup only. if you're using monitors or computer speakers to mix, try using headphones. if you still hear it, it's there. if not, it's an issue of a strange frequency that's causing rumbling in your speakers or the desk they're on. i have my monitors on auralex isolation floats for this reason alone. this sounds like it could be your problem.

if not, and if the note is causing a serious interference, use a frequency analyzer plugin and watch for spikes while the vibraphone plays. using the frequency detected in the spikes, use an eq, reducing the gain with a sharp q, in the offending frequency to reduce it's effect. it may not be possible to completely eliminate it, but you can make it more palatable. if it creates a honky sound, sweep the frequency until you can find the best mix.

hope it helps.
