Cubase or Pro Tools for music creation?

I haven't done recording on a PC setup since about year 2000 now, and at the time I was using Cubase as that was all I knew about.
I have used Pro Tools a little too. Now I am investing some money (about £700) into a new laptop, and recording equipment / software. I would like to know what you think I should go for? I'm a solo guitarist looking to make high quality backing tracks.

Any suggestions for soundcard / software package ideas would be a great help. I'm thinking a USB sound card solution as it's for my new laptop. I have seen the M-Box which comes with Pro Tools, that's about it really.

Cheers, best answer will be chosen as always! Thanks for reading

Hey Wragster-

As you'll be recording guitar I would recomend Pro Tools. Here's why: Pro Tools is and always has been more of a "virtual multitrack record and mixer", as opposed to cubase, which is well known for it's advanced MIDI sequencing. While they both do both functions very well, I find Pro Tools to be simpler to use when it comes to working with audio tracks, while Cubase is more intuitive and streamlined for working with virtual instruments and MIDI.

Pro Tools is also more commonly found in other studios, which could make it easier later on down the road if you wanted to send your session to someone to mix or master your tracks.
[Not that you wouldn't be able to have someone mix your tarcks if you use Cubase, it would just be easier since you could deliver your session as it is, without having to bounce each track out individually (or all at once) in Cubase or another application.]

However, there are lots of interesting apps for recording, and depending on your style of music, you find them more to your tast than Cubase or Pro Tools. You might want to look into these others:
Ableton Live (interesting features, lots of looping advantages)
Cakewalk Sonar
Reaper (inexpensive).

Lastly, if you know Cubase- you might want to go with that- nothing kills your creativity like struggling with new software. (sorry for the wishwashy answer!)

Hope that helps-
P.S. for Pro Tools, the mBox is a good choice, they run about 250-300 USD, including Pro Tools LE software.
