I need to know absolutely the best mic preamp that there is.?

I'm using an M-Audio Nova phantom powered with a behringer eurorack going into a Peavey XR-600bh vintage head. I'm looking to trade in my peavey and a few odds and ends around the studio and get just one mic pre-amp and a Hughes and Kettner head. I play rock with an emphasis on harmonies and melodies. I also do death metal. Death metal is the hardest to get the right sound, it's so particular, down to the brand most of the time.

I'm using Ableton Live, any suggestions on what sounds the best are welcome, welcome. I like Pantera.

Neve pre-amps are almost an industry standard, however, Presonus and HHB make excellent units as well.

pick a program, get it’s “power” book. I learned everything from these books (I’m a book-first-then-experiement kind of learner). http://www.amazon.com/Ableton-Live-Power-Comprehensive-Guide/dp/1598633252 etc
